Matthew 5 Blessed are those who mourn
Jul 19, 2026
Jesus' second beatitude is a blessing upon those who mourn. To a Jewish culture that was subjugated by the Roman government, this must have been a comfort. To be told that in grieving you are participating in the work of the Kingdom of Heaven is a powerful moment of healing and hope.
Today, Jesus' blessing to mourn is still true. We should mourn the things that grieve God and see the world as he sees it, broken and helpless. To those who still endure suffering and hardship and cry out to God in their pain and despair, you are blessed.
