Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in Spirit

The first statement of blessings given by Jesus is "Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven." To be poor in Spirit is to recognize the poverty of our soul when sin separates us from God. It is the first step of discipleship to become aware of your need for Jesus, then to repent of sin and receive the gift of grace and salvation through faith.

To be poor in Spirit is to rely fully upon God for your daily living and governance. To live in the blessing of being poor in Spirit is to live into the great reversal of faith where the things of this world mean little, but the things that matter to God mean everything.
