Baptism Information
What is Baptism
Baptism is an outward sign of an inward Grace. The application of water is a visible symbol of an inner commitment to follow Jesus with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Matthew 22:37).
The decision to be baptized should not be taken lightly. It is the outward commitment to follow God and develop a healthy, intimate, passionate, growing relationship with Jesus Christ..
Baptism is not salvation; it is a symbol of Salvation that Jesus commanded we celebrate (Matthew 28:19-20). Baptism is a sacrament, which means that it is one of the two holy actions Jesus commanded. Communion is the other sacrament. One crucial understanding of baptism is that it is not the finish line for a believer. Baptism is a means of grace and is the beginning or the continuance of the process of sanctification.
Where is Baptism in the Bible?
Genesis 17 Covenant of Circumcision and Baptism
Romans 6:4 "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a
new life."
Ephesians 4:4-6 "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all."
Colossians 2:12 "Having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead."
1 Peter 3:21 "And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also-not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”
What are the requirements for baptism?
The decision of Baptism is always taken with a cost counted. Jesus repeatedly said to his disciples, "Count the cost before following me." Someone getting baptized should understand that they are giving up old culture, old gods, and the old self.
Through our baptism we are affirming outwardly that we have a new identity in the family of God. This is what is meant when Jesus said, "Jesus answered, "Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again," (John 3:5-7).
To be baptized into Christ we have to assume a new Core Identity with a transformed heart.
In baptism believers claim and even physically depict the death of their old lives and their sins are nailed to the cross. The old life and ways of thinking are buried with Jesus. A follower of Christ then sets out to live into a healthy, intimate, passionate, growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Why do we baptize infants and children and other denominations do not?
The early church baptized the whole family. In 1 Corinthians 1:16, Paul states, "Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas..." Baptism is connected to the symbol of circumcision in the Old Testament which is to be included into the family of God.
